Big Ears, Little Ears

Listening is where control begins. Listening is where connection begins. Listening is where understanding begins.

When you use your ears to truly listen, your Big Brain and Little Brain are both attentive—challenging each other for control of the information. Big Brain listens carefully to everything that is being said in order to completely understand what is being communicated. Big Brain gives the other person its complete attention because it wants to be engaged in the conversation. Big Brain is a master of the art of listening.

Little Brain, on the other hand, filters the message to eliminate anything it doesn’t want to hear. Instead of listening, it’s not truly interested in the conversation or what the other person is saying. While the other person is talking, Little Brain waits for an opening so it can continue with what it wants to say.

Big Brain is interested in dialogue; Little Brain in monologues and not listening. Simon & Garfunkel put it well in their classic song “The Boxer,” describing how some people choose not to hear what they don’t want to hear.

What is said is not as important as what is heard. Listening with your Big Brain ensures that you’ll hear the whole message and be better equipped to find the best answer. It also improves overall communication and relationships. When someone feels heard, they feel more connected to the person who is listening to them. True listening reinforces trust.
